Tel Aviv, 5 Rabi’ul Akhir 1434 H/14 February 2013 (MINA) – Israel finally admitted that they had imprisoned the man who reported by Australian media as a Mossad agent then committed suicide in solitary confinement two years ago.
Tel Aviv was forced to admit on Wednesday (13/2) that the man referred to as ‘prisoner X’ has been jailed under false pretenses with the pretext of security reasons.
Israel admited it after Australian media managed to track down the identity of the victim although Israel seeks to conceal from the media spotlight on Tuesday (12/2) according to Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reports monitored by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA), Friday.
The prisoners X named Ben Zygier. He reportedly hanged himself in a prison closed to Tel Aviv at the end of 2010. Ben Zygier was born in Melbourne, 34 years ago with dual citizenship of Australia and Israel. He worked as Israeli spy agency Mossad, ABC news report.
Israel’s Supreme Court said that based on fit an extensive investigation done by the government for more than six weeks that Zygier was doing committed suicide. At that time he was in the cell after sentenced to 18 years in prison by the court.
According to ABC report, Zygier was a prisoner who was foerbiden to visit and closed off from the outside world. Other reports also indicated that the courier guard of the jail did not know his identity.
“Why is it isolated? Are there any indication he committed treason against Israel,” Maan quoted.
Greg Sheridan, the editor of a newspaper in Israel said, “If he was a Mossad agent who ended up in an Israeli jail, it means that there is something wrong with Zygier”.
Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr admitted that Australian government has received the news that there was an Australian citizen who was detained by Israel in 2010 for violations of security.
However, Carr spoke after the death news revealed by the media. (T/P04/E1)
