Gaza City, 27 Jumadil Awal 1434/7 April 2013 (MINA) – Hamas claimed it arrested Western spies from the US, UK, France and Germany that were operating in the Gaza Strip and targeting the organization, on Saturday (6/4).

“The Gaza Strip is swarming with Western intelligence agencies, such as the American, British, French and German services,” said Mohammed Lafi, an internal security chief, quoted on the interior ministry website.

“They all target Gaza and Hamas,” he said, while also pointing a finger at unnamed Arab intelligence services as quoted by Maan.

The Hamas official said the security services had “a list of collaborators who will be arrested once the time for them to repent has run out,” according to Maan report monitored by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA), Sunday

Some have already been arrested and “half of them have confessed to being collaborators,” said Lafi, who also cautioned against Palestinian journalists feeding information to foreign correspondents and institutions.

Hamas was branded as a terrorist organisation by the Unites States and European Union, on March 12 set a one-month ultimatum for alleged collaborators with Israel to surrender in return for leniency.

“This is a chance for all those who fell victims to the deception of Israeli security forces to return to their people,” a spokesman for the Hamas Interior Ministry said.

This campaign is an appeal to our people to be on alert so as to foil the enemy’s espionage schemes,” the spokesman said. “The battle with the enemy is a long one.”

Hamas believes there are many Palestinians in the Gaza Strip who tipped off Israel about the location of rocket launchers that were targeted during Operation Pillar of Defense in November of last year.

During the Gaza operation, Palestinian gunmen in Gaza executed people they accused of “collaborating” with Israel and filming positions of Hamas fighters. (T/P01/E1).
